The fact that the director is also the film's composer speaks volumes. The rhythm of this quirky film is spot on, it doesn't miss a beat. However, it's unfortunate that after the distinct premise the crux of the film clicks into vague territory. The scenes following on from the fantastic opening are too superficial and contrived. There are no surprises and the result is a finale that feels flat and unilluminating.

A haunting, emotional experience that had me on the edge of my seat throughout. Though the journey of the film was clear-cut, the nuance in the character relationships and the truth behind the performances brought the film to life. In addition to all this, simmering powerfully underneath the surface action was the film's chilling reflection on society: how male-dominated culture exerts control over women.

If it's a heartwarming film you're after, this will do you nicely. The animation perfectly delivers the cliché yet powerful premise and establishes the clear and stirring provocation within minutes. From the midpoint onwards the mise-en-scène becomes too contrived for my liking. However, the exceedingly emotive music and beautiful pictures take control to keep the unwarranted poeticism of the second half affecting.
